Songs for Foster Parents

Sometimes you just need to feel, get lost in a good song, and have words that will help express the journey of fostering. If you’re looking for a playlist for the hard days, here are 25 songs to check out.

1. Even When it Hurts by Hillsong United

This is one of my absolute favorite worship songs to listen to when everything feels out of control.  Even when it hurts like hell, I will praise God.

2. Symphony by Switch

“Symphony” has been on repeat at my house lately.  There is so much that resonates with how I feel and what I see for my foster children’s future.

3. Haven’t Seen it Yet by Danny Gokey

A common theme in all the songs I’ve chosen for this list is hope.  We can feel like there’s no hope for the future of a certain case, but maybe we just haven’t seen it.

4. Look Up Child by Lauren Daigle

Lauren Daigle is a phenomenal singer and artist.  This song is all about giving control back to God and focusing your eyes back on Him.

5. Thy Will by Hillary Scott

This is the type of song that you can pray word for word over a case and over your children.

6. You Say by Lauren Daigle

It’s hard for Lauren Daigle to not make the list twice.  “You Say” reminds us of who we are in Christ.  I am loved.  I am strong.  I am held.  I am God’s.

7. I Just Need You by TobyMac

“I Just Need You” is our go-to living room dance jam.  It’s so easy to get caught up in the things we believe we need from God.  It’s so much harder to recognize that we just need God himself.

8. Even If by MercyMe

MercyMe isn’t my personal favorite, but I do appreciate the lyrics to many of their songs.  There is a high likelihood of heartbreak in fostering, and “Even If” provides that perfect refrain of let’s hope for the best, but if it doesn’t happen, I’ll still be okay.  We don’t always hear that message in the Christian community, which is a shame.

9. Nobody Knows by The Lumineers

“Nobody knows how to say goodbye.”  Ugh, hit me in the feels.

10. Kings and Queens by Audio Adrenaline

This is probably the most directly related to foster care of all the songs on this list.  It’s a good anthem to remind us of why we’re doing what we’re doing.

11. Oh My Soul- Casting Crowns

“I won’t try to promise that it all works out.”  It may not, but we’re not alone.

12. I Will Fear No More by The Afters

We fear for the kids.  We fear for their families, for ourselves.  At some point, we need to hand over all our worries to God, let go of the fear, and give it over.

13. Lord (I Don’t Know) by Newsboys

Newsboys were my childhood favorite band.  This is one of those songs that has been with me since middle school and I fall back on whenever I feel totally lost and directionless.

14. Oceans by Hillsong United

“You never failed.  And you won’t start now.”

15. Need You Now by Plumb

Plumb is definitely perfect for an angsty come back to Jesus moment.  Sometimes we just angrily need to cry out to God, “Alright, I need you now.”

16. Miracle by Unspoken

We can’t expect God to answer all our prayers to give us everything we want, but we can pray without ceasing for him to work on behalf of the children in our care and for his miraculous will to be done in their lives.  We can pray that even when they’ve moved on from our homes.

17. Fearless by Jasmine Murray

This is one of those songs that will pump you up and get you back on your feet to fight again.  “Bring on the unknown!”

18. It’s Not Over Yet by King and Country

It’s not over yet.  It’s a simple message but such a good reminder.  It’s not over yet when the kids got sent home from school, tore apart the house, and had an hour long meltdown.  It’s not over yet when a child goes home.  They have their whole lives ahead of them we can pray over.

19. You’re Going to Be Okay by Brian and Jenn Johnson

We all need to hear it sometimes.  You’re going to be okay.

20. All of Me by Matt Hammitt

This sums up everything I feel towards my foster children.  “You’re gonna have all of me.  Even if it’s not enough to mend our broken hearts.”

21. Strong Enough by Matthew West

There’s so much that we experience, and the kids experience, that we’re just not strong enough to handle on our own.  When I’m not strong enough, thank heavens God is.

22. Sparrows by Jason Gray

An entire song devoted to not worrying?  Yes, totally applicable.

23. Reckless Love by Cory Ashbury

“Reckless Love” recenters me.  His love is so great for these children.

24. So Will I by Hillsong United

“If everything exists to lift you high so will I.”

25. Do It Again by Elevation Worship

It’s so important to take inventory once in a while and look at how God has been working.  He has provided over and over.  What makes me think he won’t continue to do so?

Strong enough by Mathew West was my battle cry during out 3 years in foster care. It was worth it in the end.
